ERICA, LIN-MANUEL MIRANDA…

All Erica Chase-Salerno asked was to be a fly on the wall at my Moana interviews with Lin-Manuel Miranda and Dwayne The Rock Johnson– but she got much more than that!  Her story, energy and gratitude reminded me that there are a LOT of good people in this world eager to help each other out, and my faith in humanity was lifted just by being around her.  She kept thanking me throughout the day, but all I could think was, “No, thank YOU.” Erica- your light is undeniable and thank you so much for sharing it with us. E-Strong, baby!

Take a peek at her experience.

Thank you Fandango, Walt Disney Animation Studios Moana!

GUILT-FREE SHOPPING!!!

Nothing beats looking good while doing good.  That’s why my favorite charity event of the year is Shop For Success benefiting Dress for Success, an organization that provides clothing and professional training to help women in need.   It’s going to be an epic weekend of designer deals.  Who’s with me?

Adventures in Microneedling

You wanna what?  Wait.  Needles in my face?  WHAAAAAT?  No way.  Ever.  Not happening.

That was my initial reaction when I first heard about micro needling, a treatment currently all the rage in aesthetic skin care.

Micro needling uses very thin needles to create micro channels (tiny holes) in the skin.  The process stimulates your skin’s natural ability to heal itself and in the process produces collagen and elastin.

The theory here is that the micro channels deliver hylauranic acid deep below the epidermis.  It claims to improve collagen production by stimulating the dermis well below where products can reach topically.  But really, does it have to be needles?

I am a big fan of non-invasive beauty treatments, have yet to try facial injections, and have no foreseeable plan to start.  I had seen a micro needling treatment once and had added it to the column titled:  “Things I Will Never Do”, right along with diving with sharks and refusing to hire professional movers.   Besides, it looked painful and there was blood.

Then I had the opportunity to try micro needling at the highest recommendation of an actor friend who’s skin is luminous, ageless and not in that frozen, plastic Hollywood way.  She introduced me to Image Body Spa, a new med spa in West Hollywood.  After some research, a little (okay, a lot of) hand-holding, and a tiny bit of needle anxiety, I decided to give it a go.   After all, I’m a huge fan of acupuncture, so needles aren’t all bad…

Effortless chic with Ripley…

The best part about getting older is giving myself permission to invest in classic, quality pieces, that still look interesting, fresh and not like I shop exclusively off the J.Crew sale rack.  (not that there’s anything wrong with that.  It can be a very comforting place.)  When I find pieces that give a lot of bang for my buck, I spend a little more, because damn it, I’ve earned it.

Enter Ripley Rader.  A local LA designer, whose take on style matches mine: streamlined with a little bit of sex appeal, and a whole lot of figure flattering.  Her high-waisted pants are leg-lengthening, middle-whittling wonders.  The proportions of her separates and dresses are flattering on many different body types and body-conscious without leaving you feeling like you’re naked wearing sausage casing, they hug the right places and skim, ahem…others.

Processed with Snapseed.

Green Beauty Overhaul!

GreenBeauty

I’m embarrassed to be finally throwing out makeup older than my child. (seriously, how gross is that, he’s 9!) But VERY excited to be refreshing my makeup routine with pretty, high performing organic and non-toxic  basics from Citrine Beauty.

Jane Iredale Daytime Eyeshadow Kit
Silky, natural colors perfect for everyday, but easy to smoke up and go for more dramatic looks, this palette is a daily workhorse.

Antonym Baked Blush in Peach
Obsessed with this blush!  The perfect peach with warm undertones of gold and pink, I’ll be wearing this blush year-round, plus the bamboo compact is so ec0-chic.

Per-fekt Lash Perfection Gel
Don’t think a green mascara can rival your Great Lash or Voluminous?  Think again.  This gel makes my skimpy lashes long and lush and is a snap to remove.

Ilia Lip gloss in The Butterfly and I

The perfect daytime gloss gives a dewy, sexy pout, is non-drying and non-toxic.  Happy dance!  Who wants all those gross chemicals on their lips?

Ilia Concealer in Dandelion C3

Great coverage in a light formulation, this works great on well-moisturized skin with or without foundation.  I’m loving it on bare skin for my “no makeup” days.

More green beauty finds coming soon…

Travel Capsule Wardrobe:…

For an upcoming 2 week trip to Japan, I challenged myself to pack the leanest wardrobe I could.   Here were my requirements:

  1.  Everything must feel as comfy as pajamas, but not LOOK like pajamas.
  2.  Footwear must not hurt.  Ever.
  3.  Machine-washable
  4.  Everything mixes and matches, with options for a dressed-up dinner, comfy plane/train ride and touring in hot, humid weather.

Here’s the breakdown of what made the cut, for reference only, I’ve linked to stuff still in stores.

Simple, chic and functional enough to hold your summer adventure essentials, this Cuyana Crossbody Pouch gives a refreshing pop of color to any ensemble, plus the strap also detaches for use as a clutch or makeup bag.  I wear mine with cutoffs and a white flowy top or my favorite striped sundress.  Can’t wait to take it to Japan this summer…

This irreverent, fun, new sunscreen not only protects with minerals while loaded with antioxidants, but instantly ups your cool factor with its retro rock concert vibe.  (SunDMC and Goth Block are their other offerings)  Let it Block is paraben-free, and friendlier to the environment, plus the packaging is recyclable and uses less plastic.  Block on!

Looking for summer refreshment, without drinking liquid sugar?  Aloe Gloe is organic, GMO-free, locally-produced, full of the benefits of aloe vera and only 35 calories!   Plus, aloe is good for both your skin and your digestion.  I like the coconut and crisp aloe flavors, alone or added to smoothies.

No matter the season, I am obsessed with Uma Oils. Their Ultimate Brightening Face Oil is the one product I never, ever swap out of my routine.  In summer, when sun exposure and risk of brown spots are at an all-time high, this organic, hand-crafted,  oil keeps my complexion looking radiant and clear, plus it smells like heaven.  A luxurious necessity!

IPL hair removal at home?  No way.  YES WAY.  I love that Luma RX is not painful, messy, time-consuming or laden with chemicals, but simply put, a VERY effective way to permanently remove unwanted hair.  I was doubtful at first, but after they gifted me the Mini and showed me how to use it,  I’m heading into my 1st summer free of waxing, shaving or razor burn.  The technology works best on darker hair colors, and is FDA cleared for areas south of your eyebrows.

Want to kick start your summer style?  I’m giving one lucky reader their own Luma RX Mini, valued at $379!  Just leave a comment below sharing what you love most about summer and a winner will be picked at random.   Good luck!

Girls’ Night Out!

IMG_6725

I feel so lucky to have women in my life who inspire and encourage me, make me laugh and support me through thick and thin.  As time goes by, I value time spent with girlfriends more than ever.

When my pal Romy Schorr of Romy Raves invited me to a girls’ night out cooking class at HipCooks in downtown LA, sponsored by The Crossings Sauvignon Blanc, I couldn’t resist the chance to spend some QT with a stellar group of ladies.

Like my blog crush, Sarah James of Whoorl, from whom I steal green beauty and style inspiration all the time, and who just happened to be in town!  Yay!

After braving rush hour to the LA downtown arts district, we started the night catching up, an intimate group of influencers, tasting The Crossings’ crisp, fruity Sauvignon Blanc.  The perfect way to decompress after LA traffic, and celebrate National Sauvignon Blanc day, which yes, it’s a thing.

The perfect wine for summer entertaining, and just about $13/bottle.

Next, some knife skills pointers and we made an incredible green bean potato salad with rustic pesto dressing.  Super yum.

IMG_2380

Seared scallops with a spiedini sauce over confetti rice with roasted fennel came next, which paired perfectly with the Sauvignon Blanc.   We talked shop, caught up on love lives and most importantly, discussed the holy grail of finding a comfortable, yet chic sandal for summer.  (Which I just ordered, and will be sharing deets soon).

I even got to embrace my inner Great British Baking show nerd by trying my hand at rolling the gluten-free walnut cake with berry whipped cream into a log- a delightful and delicious way to end the evening.

Cheers to more girls’ nights out!!!

Big thanks to The Crossings for sponsoring our night!
